Turning 30 is Weird

Turning 30 is such an odd time in your life. It’s the expectation for a few things: you should have your life together, buy a house, thrive in your career, and have a few kids by then. When I turned 30 in April, I kept feeling reminded I couldn’t check off all of those boxes and felt like I was failing in some sense. Social media has us comparing ourselves to everyone else’s lives. I would look at people who were my age and see they had built a brand new house, had a beautiful baby, and had the family portraits where everyone wore white outfits and looked absolutely perfectly content with life. Comparison is the thief of joy.

You wake up one morning, and nothing fits anymore like it used to. I’m no longer wearing the same size I wore in High School. Those cool t-shirts that were a size extra small and small are now in the trash because I’m aware I do not have a flat stomach anymore. How are these 30 something year olds wearing crop tops and still eating…food? I couldn’t give up carbs to look like a plastic barbie doll.

In your 20s, you still feel like a youthful teenager. You can pull all nighters and still run a marathon the next day. You can’t really afford much though and your credit is mediocre at best. Decision making skills are not all the way there, so poor choices are still made. Millennials, how are ya'll doing? Apparently, we need to put retinol under our eyes and keep Tylenol on hand according to TikTok. Since when are we not forever young?

Since turning 30, I can’t say I’ve bought a house or had a baby yet. That would be cool. I can say that I’ve been married for 10 years, graduated college twice, taught for 3 years, have 4 cats, and have good credit. I’ve learned it’s okay that my goals take a little longer than when I wrote them all down in a notebook when I was 20. I’ll get there eventually. In the meantime, I will continue staying up late with my husband watching funny movies with our cats eating his amazing concoctions.

My 30th birthday cake my husband bought me! It looks like my cat Peanut.

Reading and Writing

Ever since I was a little girl, I always wanted to be just like my mom. She read books constantly, listened to cassette tapes of books in the car when she would pick me up from school, wrote journal entries in her notebooks, and enjoyed the literacy. I can recall always taking trips to the library and exploring the books there with my mom, even when I was just learning how to read. She read me bedtime stories every night. Throughout experiences in school and at home, I have found a love for writing and reading. Writing is especially my favorite because it allows my creativity to run wild and speak even when I do not know what to say. It has also helped me through rough times and even to sort out my thoughts, life events, and even goals. I encourage everyone around me to pick up a notebook and start writing if they are feeling down.

When I was in Kindergarten, I really loved homework. It was so exciting to me to get to do school at home. I loved practicing my letters over and over along with all the fun crafts we would do that went along with whatever we were learning that week. Sesame Street taught me my ABCs very early on. What kid didn’t like that show? Shortly after that, I would “play” and have school with my little brother. Of course, I was the teacher. He was four years younger than me. I pretended to teach him the things that I learned at school, but he really did learn. In fact, I taught him his ABC’s. I tried to keep teaching him things until he got to the age where he would rather watch Scooby Doo than write his name on paper.

Two years later, I was in 2nd Grade and was diving into the world of writing in my class. I was in Whitehouse Elementary School and learned so many things just in that year of writing workshops and developing stories. My stories may have been about silly things and animals, but this is the year that I found a true love for writing. I’ve always typically been a very shy and reserved child, but writing opened up a new world for me. I wasn’t good at math and I knew it, but I felt like I got the hang of this whole “writing thing”. It was a big deal when it came time to take our TAKS test and get our scores back from our Reading and Writing test. However, I valued writing so much I practiced often. I remember getting our scores in and I got one of the highest scores in the class. It was a great moment! The year after that, we continued our writing skills even more, but incorporated writing with some of the other subjects from time to time. It was my favorite when we would do writing and history together.

In a two-week session, we made homemade candles, learned how to make paper and made a notebook with the paper, and then we constructed an old timey wagon like the settlers used to use in the old days with paper. When we were finally done with all our projects, we had a special writing time. The teacher gave everyone the candle we made on our desk and it set right next to notebook we made. She lit everyone’s candle on their desk, turned out the main light, and we began writing in our notebooks that we made. We wrote about what it would be like to live in the days of the settlers. It was interesting because in history we were also learning about the same thing and that period. It was the most memorable experience.

A year later, in my fourth-grade class, we wrote a story of our own and even had the opportunity to illustrate and publish our very own book. This was so much fun! It allowed us to be creative and have fun with writing and even doing our own art to go along with the story. It is just like a real book, too. There is a picture of me that says “Grace Nicole Young” as the author along with the year it was published. I still have the book on my shelf hoping it will inspire me to someday publish and illustrate a children’s short story.

As teenagers go through crazy moments in his or her life, everything will seem surreal. Suddenly, puberty happens, and everything changes for girls and guys. It’s that weird age where one’s body goes through changes and emotions feel stronger than ever, well at least for girls. It’s the moment you get your first kiss, have your first break up, find your group of friends to hang with, and you truly aim to “find yourself”. When I was this age, my parents didn’t let me have a Myspace page just yet, so I stuck to my old fashion notebooks for letting my thoughts out there. I wrote about everything through these awkward ages. Going through my journal entries from when I was that young, I can read about all the life events that happened in those notebooks. I always dated every page I wrote in for records purposes.

In 7th grade, I had a list of the boys I had crushes on, who my best friends were, and all my teachers I had that year. That summer, my parents told me we were moving a few hours away. I read the journal entry I wrote for that day and I had so many emotions going on and was so upset because I thought I would never make friends again and how scared I was to move to a new school(again). As I read half a year later in my diary, I read how I made so many new friends at my new school, how I was able to get in band since it was such a small school versus the 4A school I came from, and that I loved the country so much instead of the city. Reading my writing from the past helps me remember the old days and understand the present.

I recorded a lot of my life on paper because I knew someday I would like to revisit these memories and share them with my kids someday, well maybe not all of them. I’ve always liked writing if it’s a journal, a short story, my personal goals, my finances, or personal experiences that give advice. My mom keeps a journal as well and does the same thing that I do. Writing from when I was little has taught me to write about important moments of my life; even if they’re not always great moments. I aspire to someday take writing to a whole new level with writing more than just a blog and teach kids to love writing as much if not more than I do.

Why Health Is So Important

Life is so precious and fragile. I never knew when I was younger how my health could change at any time depending on what I ate, how I felt, and how much I exercised.

I started having bad health problems when I was 15 from drinking too much soda especially Mountain Dew. There was pain in my lower stomach and side and the caffeine dumps were the worst. The only thing I knew then was to completely quit drinking soda cold turkey. It was hard because I used to depend on it for energy, but I quit soda and felt a lot better.

I started having terrible bladder issues when I was 18. I didn't really know what caused the problem, but I was very determined to try to fix it because it affected school, sleeping, and basically interrupted life. I couldn't sit through a 45 minute class without having to go to the bathroom. I couldn't sleep for long periods of time because certain positions of sleep would hurt my bladder and I would have to go to the bathroom. I realized stress, anxiety, and certain foods would irritate my bladder. I learned to de stress, started exercising, researched what foods irritated bladders, eating healthier, and started bathing in essential oils like lavender and tea tree oil.

One's life can be changed with just a few lifestyle changes without having to get on medications with crazy side effects. You can live longer if you stop  eating and drinking preservatives and food that's not "whole" foods. I wish someone would have taught me in school how important nutrition and fitness is and how it can greatly affect your life. Ever since I've learned the knowledge I know, I cook more homemade foods, eat way less sugar, juice daily to get the nutrients I need, choose organic when available, read ingredients on products before buying them (To make sure there's no high fructose corn syrup or aspartame), and aim to have the best health for my family and myself's life.

Health can either make or break one's life. To the people that don't care about their health, that affects not only them, but more so the people around them. Honor your body and watch what you put in your body. Most people don't know because they don't read what is in the foods they buy from the store. Be different.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies."

Life's Most Awesome Moments

In all nearly twenty one years I've lived, I've had a lot of awesome moments happen. I've moved a few times, moved schools often, and experienced a lot. From training wheels on my bike to my graduation day, it's been quite an adventure.

When I was 16 years old I went to Panama City in Florida with my local church for a Retreat. We had the beach all to ourselves along with a pool by our rooms. The white sands were heavenly along with all the great food we ate there cooked by the ladies of the church. They had an altar call and baptized people that felt they needed to rededicate their life to God. When I got baptized in the ocean, it was such an amazing feeling coming out of the water because I felt like a new person. All I wanted was Jesus after that! No more soul searching for my purpose because I found my mine that day. The Holy Spirit really got ahold of me that day in 2011.

I've been in band my whole high school career and have loved it like crazy! Music has been a big part of of life and almost all my friends were made in band. Marching has always been so fun. It's tons of hard work and multitasking skills to be able to march and remember at least five songs at once. I marched with an alto saxophone. I played tenor and soprano sax in jazz band throughout the years. Those saxophones are heavy for a girl! When I was a senior in high school, I went to a new school and became a Dragon. The year before I was also in a different great band. We worked so hard that we went to state finals. We marched at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio, TX at the state finals. What a feeling it was in that huge stadium that echoed every sound. That was one of the best days I felt super accomplished in my music career in 2012.

It was a hot sunny day when Jeffrey and I happened to be at Galveston for almost a week. We were dating and it was pretty serious, so I knew a proposal would come up soon. The timing was what I did not know. We went to the peninsula where it was secluded instead of the crowded beach on Galveston Island. We fished, played in the sand, flown kites, took pictures, found sea shells, and had a great time. We even caught ourselves standing in the middle of tons of crabs and that was pretty scary! We got super dressed up one of the days we were there and decided we were going to do a photo shoot with his tripod and awesome camera. We were doing poses here and there. He yells from the tripod "How about I do one on my knee?" As he runs to me from the camera(the camera had a five second wait) and gets down on one knee, pulls out the ring box, opens it, and says "Will you marry me?" It was the sweetest and most romantic memory I will cherish forever. I have a photo to capture the moment and will never forget how he proposed to me in 2013.

Organizing Music with Moodify

I suck at organizing and labeling things; this includes music. I just dump everything everywhere and forget what playlists are for what. I’v...
